Nathalie Álvarez Mesén



Nathalie is a Swedish-Costa Rican writer/director who specializes in directing children and teens.

She was born in Sweden but spend most of her childhood and teen years in Costa Rica and, after high school, moved back to Sweden to study film and screenwriting. She also got a BFA in physical acting at the Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts.


Nathalie’s short ”Filip”, was awarded Best Live-Action Film under 15 minutes in Palm Springs Shortfest 2016 and has screened in prestigious festivals around the world. Her short ”Asunder” premiered at the Stockholm Film Festival and screened at the Telluride Film Festival 2016 as part of the program Calling Cards. She was also invited to be part of Berlinale Talent Campus 2017.


Currently she’s finishing her M.F.A. in Film Directing and Screenwriting at Columbia University in New York, while working on the development of her first feature film Clara Sola, together with producers Nima Yousefi, Katrin Pors and Cristina Gallego. The latter produced the Cannes winning film Embrace of the Serpent, which was nominated for an Academy Award in 2016.


Clara Sola, that is one of the backed projects by the Hubert Bals Fund, has been presented co-production markets such as San Sebastian Film Festival’s Co-Production Forum, Film London Market and Bogotá Audiovisual Market. It was also selected was selected for the Lab Eave Puentes 2016 and the Latino Screenwriting Project. This September it will be part of the No Borders International Co-production Market (during IFP Week).
